Kazakhstan continues to strengthen its position as a transport and logistics hub between Asia and Europe. Amid growing freight volumes, the country is developing railway infrastructure, international transport corridors, and multimodal routes.
According to JSC NC Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, 319.97 million tonnes of cargo were transported by rail in 2025. In January–June 2026, rail freight volumes reached 157.15 million tonnes, 3% higher than during the same period last year. Transit cargo accounted for 17.68 million tonnes. Rail transport currently accounts for more than 60% of Kazakhstan’s freight turnover.
One of the key priorities remains the development of international transport corridors, including the China–Europe route and the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR), also known as the Middle Corridor. Kazakhstan is expanding railway capacity, modernizing border and port-terminal infrastructure, and developing the ports of Aktau and Kuryk.
Major projects include the construction of the Bakhty–Ayagoz railway line, the development of the Moyynty–Kyzylzhar and Darbaza–Maktaaral sections, as well as the modernization of around 3,000 km of strategically important railway sections. The development program through 2029 provides for the construction and modernization of approximately 5,000 km of railway lines and the repair of 11,000 km of tracks.
