A new transport and logistics complex operated by Kusto Logistics has started operations in the Ili District of Almaty Region. The project is designed to strengthen freight transportation, expand multimodal infrastructure and increase the region’s transit capacity.
Located on an area of more than 26.5 hectares, the complex includes railway and road infrastructure, a container yard, warehouses, loading and unloading areas, and a management centre.
The terminal has the capacity to handle up to 100,000 containers per year and more than 111,000 tonnes of cargo per month. A 45-tonne-capacity crane has been installed at the site and can handle up to 25 containers per hour.
The project attracted KZT 28.1 billion in investment. Around 100 new jobs are expected to be created once the complex reaches its planned capacity.
The launch of the hub was marked by the departure of the first container train, signalling the start of the terminal’s operations.
According to representatives of Kusto Group, approximately 80% of Kazakhstan’s container cargo passes through the Almaty transport hub. The new terminal is expected to strengthen logistics connections between the northern and southern regions of the country and facilitate the movement of import and export cargo to other regions of Kazakhstan and neighbouring countries.
Construction of a grain terminal is also underway on the site. Once completed, it will have the capacity to store up to 14,000 tonnes of agricultural products.
The launch of the new hub highlights the growing demand for modern logistics infrastructure in Kazakhstan. The development of railway terminals, container infrastructure and multimodal transportation is becoming an important factor in strengthening the country’s transit potential and trade links between Asia and Europe.
